Background of the study
This study examines translation practices employed in rendering Hausa proverbs in bilingual texts, a critical endeavor in preserving cultural heritage while promoting linguistic accessibility. Hausa proverbs, rich in metaphor and traditional wisdom, are integral to the cultural identity of Hausa speakers and are often used in literary and educational contexts (Sani, 2024). Translators face the dual challenge of maintaining the figurative meaning and cultural context of proverbs while making them intelligible to speakers of another language. The study investigates different translation methodologies including literal translation, adaptation, and transcreation, assessing how each approach handles the complexities of Hausa proverbs. By analyzing a selection of bilingual texts, conducting interviews with professional translators, and comparing translation outcomes, the research explores the balance between fidelity to the source and the natural flow of the target language. It further considers the role of cultural markers and idiomatic expressions in ensuring that the translated proverbs resonate with the target audience. This comprehensive analysis will provide insights into best practices for proverb translation, highlighting both successes and areas for improvement (Sani, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Translating Hausa proverbs into bilingual texts poses significant challenges due to their deep cultural embeddedness and reliance on figurative language. Inadequate translation practices can lead to loss of meaning, misinterpretation, and cultural dissonance (Sani, 2024). There is an evident lack of consensus on the most effective translation strategies to balance literal accuracy with cultural adaptation. Consequently, readers may not fully appreciate the wisdom and contextual significance inherent in the original proverbs. This study aims to identify the critical shortcomings in current translation practices and evaluate their impact on the preservation and communication of cultural heritage.

Objectives of the study:

To analyze current translation practices for rendering Hausa proverbs.

To identify challenges in maintaining cultural and figurative meaning.

To propose improved translation methodologies.

Research questions:

What translation methods are used for Hausa proverbs in bilingual texts?

How do these methods affect the preservation of cultural meaning?

What strategies can enhance proverb translation accuracy?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the challenges of translating Hausa proverbs, ensuring that cultural wisdom is accurately conveyed in bilingual texts. The findings will benefit translators, educators, and literary scholars by offering refined methodologies that preserve cultural integrity and enhance reader comprehension (Sani, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining translation practices for Hausa proverbs in selected bilingual texts, focusing on literary and educational contexts.

Definitions of terms:

Proverbs: Short, traditional sayings that express cultural wisdom.

Transcreation: Adapting content to preserve cultural nuances.

Bilingual texts: Written materials presented in two languages.
